Pathways to Independence: Innovations in Pediatric Positioning and Mobility

Past Workshops

This free, hands-on workshop is designed for pediatric physical and occupational therapists across Vermont, supporting children of all ages and in a variety of settings. This training focuses on strengthening participants’ assessment skills to better understand the positioning needs of the children they serve.

Participants learn how to perform comprehensive assessments for lying, sitting and standing. Through hands-on practice and observation, participants gain experience in identifying individual postural needs and evaluating body structure to inform equipment recommendations.

The workshop includes a blend of brief lectures, live demonstrations, and hands-on activities offering practical techniques to support thorough, well-informed equipment recommendations based on individualized assessments.

  • 1-hour Zoom training
  • Audience: anyone interested in learning more about 24-Hour Postural Care, and gaining an understanding of what it is and who might benefit. This includes families, caregivers, physicians and nurses, Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers, rehab providers, and educators.

Children with motor disorders spend half of their lives lying down. Under-supported lying leads to postural asymmetries which impact upright positioning during the day. This 90-minute training will increase your understanding of how lying and upright postures are connected and how improving nighttime positioning can promote improved participation and function at home and in school.

This training will include information on:

  • Identification of children at risk for postural asymmetries
  • Measurement of postural asymmetries including quick/simple tools and more detailed assessments
  • How to choose appropriate equipment for use during the day and at night
  • Implementation of a 24-hour postural care plan including collaboration between home and school settings
  • How to support families and teams over time

You will be provided with strategies, resources, and a structured approach to improving daytime positioning, participation and function using a 24-hour postural care approach.

Audience

Pediatric providers working with children of all ages in any setting, including home-based services, schools, and outpatient clinics.

  • 2-3 hours in-person or via Zoom, with an optional in-person 1-hour equipment demonstration
  • In-depth information for rehab providers on known body distortions, how to determine if 24-Hour Postural Care is indicated, assessment of body symmetry and other outcome measures, sleep systems and intervention strategies.
