Code Switch podcast episode: Race-based medicine

Code Switch: In the world of medicine, race-based diagnoses are still very real (March 13, 2024)

I wanted to share the link to this recent Code Switch episode with Dr. Andrea Deyrup from Duke, which digs into the impacts of the continued teaching and use of race-based medicine in medical school.  I’m curious if we are seeing this in allied health education as well.  If you have any driving coming up this podcast episode is about 30 minutes and a really interesting listen that unpacks using race as a heuristic or shortcut in medicine.  (One of my favorite medical resources- the UpToDate database- also gets a critical examination!).  As we know there are no biologically defined races.  But there are socially defined or socially constructed races, and we see the impact in both health systems and health outcomes.  “While race-based health disparities are very real, the idea that our bodies are genetically different based on race is simply not.
