It&#8217;s called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/crs\/vermonter-poll\">The Vermonter Poll.<\/a> In 2022, CDCI, <a href=\"https:\/\/ddc.vermont.gov\/\">Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityrightsvt.org\/\">Disability Rights Vermont<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtlegalaid.org\/disability-law-project\">Disability Law Project<\/a>\u00a0worked together on adding questions about disability to the Vermonter Poll.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time The Vermonter Poll included questions about disability.<\/p>\n<p>Authors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cdci.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/blog\/staff\/jesse-suter\/\">Jesse C. <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We polled 632 Vermonters to learn how much they agreed with four statements:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People with disabilities have the same quality of life as people without disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with disabilities can contribute to Vermont\u2019s labor force the same as people without disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students with disabilities benefit from being in the same classrooms as students without disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students without disabilities benefit from being in the same classrooms as students with disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only Vermont residents over the age of 18 could participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Vermonters who completed the survey agreed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People with disabilities have a LOWER quality of life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When students with and without disabilities are in class together ALL students benefit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with disabilities contribute EQUALLY to the labor force.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But we also found that&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Vermonters with different types of disabilities have different attitudes about disability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Of the 632 Vermonters surveyed:<\/h3>\n\n\n<section different attitudes about disability: 65% of Vermonters with disabilities DISAGREE with the statement that people with disabilities have the same quality of life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>People taking the survey were asked: &#8220;Do you agree with the statement, &#8216;People with disabilities have the same quality of life as people without disabilities.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<li><strong>18%<\/strong> of the people who agreed had no disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>21%<\/strong> of the people who agreed reported that they had sensory disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>9%<\/strong> who agreed had functional disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>10%<\/strong> who agreed had multiple disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Most people did not agree that people with disabilities have the same quality of life as people without disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>But:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<li>\n<p class=\"qualitybox-text\">Both people with functional disabilities and people with multiple disabilities agreed with this statement the least.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"card\">\n    <div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading2\">\n      <a class=\"collapsed d-flex align-items-center justify-content-between\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>84% <\/strong>who agreed had sensory disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>39%<\/strong> who agreed had functional disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>70%<\/strong> who agreed had multiple disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"workforcebox-text\"} --><\/p>\n<p class=\"workforcebox-text\">Most people agree that people with disabilities contribute equally to the workforce. Learning about people\u2019s attitudes can show where education and change are needed.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research studies have shared findings related to attitudes about disability.<\/p>\n<h4>Disability stigma affects access to health care<\/h4>\n<p>82% of physicians in a recent survey said people with significant disabilities have a worse quality of life (Iezzoni et al., 2021).
