AAC Strategies Training Series
This training series will focus on exploring, identifying and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies for young children with complex communication needs. Participants will build a comprehensive understanding of the augmentative communication process and develop practical skills for implementing AAC with young children across everyday environments.
This training is the pre-requisite for joining our AAC Mentoring program.

Training Activities
3 Small Group Full-Day Trainings
- Day 1: AAC Assessment
- Day 2: AAC Options: Hands-On Lab
- Day 3: AAC Implementation Strategies
Participants will engage in a variety of small-group learning activities designed to strengthen the application of course concepts. Hands-on practice with AAC assessment processes, feature matching, and AAC systems will be incorporated throughout the series.
Case Study Sessions
Each session will focus on de-identified case studies of children within the participants’ caseloads. Case studies are facilitated and follow a structured format.
Activities will include:
- brainstorming AAC assessment ideas
- completing AAC feature match
- discussing AAC implementation strategies.
Resources
Participants will receive a variety of practical resources to support future implementation, including presentation slides, planning tools, observational resources, communication supports, and other materials to support AAC assessment and intervention.
Target Audience
Speech-language Pathologists (SLPs), Early Childhood Special Educators (ECSEs), Developmental Educators, Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physical Therapists (PTs), classroom teachers, and paraeducators working with children from preschool to grade 2.
Dates and Locations
Two identical training series will be offered during FY27. Participants may register for either the Fall or Spring series.
